Last week, the Americal Academy of Pediatricians issues a policy statement that suggested that doctors should be allowed to perform “clitoral pricking” to avoid mutilation if requested by a girl’s parents in some immigrant communities in the US. The proposal was met with harsh criticism, and was now withdrawn by the Academy.
“Such a proposal is outrageous because it gives the impression that clitoral pricking is “harmless” and that a request to a doctor to mutilate one’s daughter is in fact a legitimate wish” says Waris Dirie. “I am relieved that the policy statement was withdrawn and hope that medical associations worldwide will take a firm stand against all forms of FGM”.
A similar discussion is currently raging in Australia.
