Anti-FGM legislation considered in Ireland

Dublin - According to The Irish Times, Ireland’s Minister of Health Mary Harney is currently reviewing the possibilities to introduce a law banning FGM in Ireland. According to the Organisation of African Women in Ireland, AKIDWA, an estimated 2500 women in Ireland have undergone FGM. The spokeperson of the organisation, Salome Mbugua welcomed the plans of the Ministry of Health, but pointed at the need consider the danger of immigrants performing the procedure abroad. She also demanded that FGM be considered in Irelands asylum policy.
