FGM has become a current topic even in the US. In La Grange, Georgia, a 35-year old mother has been arrested because of Female Genital Mutilation.
A considerable number of girls and women continuously suffer from this cruel practice. According to NGOs in Africa, approximately 300 000 women in the US are threatened by Female Genital Mutilation. Unfortunately, there is still little research on FGM, not enough discussion of this topic and not enough awareness in the world about FGM. We don’t have exact statistics about how many people really die from the consequences of FGM, and this is exactly where the problem lies: FGM is still invisible!
