In Colombia, too, there is the ´tradition´ of performing genital mutilation on girls.
FGM is being discussed openly more and more.
A year ago we heard about FGM in Colombia for the first time. In the meantime, at least some heated discussions about FGM have flared up. The ethnic group that was discovered to hurt and mutilate their daughters in the name of ´tradition´ counts some 20.000 people. Since we hear time and again about FGM in Latin America, lately of an ethnic group in Brazil, we fear that many more girls in South America are in danger of becoming victims of FGM.
Colombian politicians are now working towards outlawing FMG, though the biggest difficulty lies in the legal situation of this ethnic group: they actually hold the right to a separate judiciary.
