“Medicalisation” of FGM is a dangerous trend

Kenya – UN officials, medical professionals and representatives of the ministry of public health are currently meeting in Nairobi to discuss strategies to address the so-called “medicalisation” of FGM. In Kenya, where performing FGM on minors has been made illegal in 2001, the procedure is increasingly often being performed by medical professionals instead of religious leaders. UNICEF regional advisor Margie de Monchy warns that even when performed by a doctor, FGM has long-term negative consequences for the victim. The medicalisation of this harmful procedure is particularly problematic since it wrongly legitimises the procedure.
