The Hague – The Dutch Minister of Health Jet Bussemaker has appointed “ambassadors” against FGM during an international conference in The Hague earlier this month. The ambassadors all come from African communities in the Netherlands and are supposed to teach parents in their communities about the complications and dangers of FGM. The minister pointed out that African immigrants in Europe are often more conservative than the societies they came from. For this reason, the Dutch government ccoperates with several countries of origin of African migrants, an approach that Bussemaker refers to as “reverse development cooperation”.
