The Ugandan police plans to enforce the legal ban of FGM more strictly in the Maroto district of Uganda. According to a police spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba, female genital mutilation is still widespread in large parts of Uganda.
Nabakooba states that parents justify the mutilation of their daughters because FGM is said to ensure their fidelity in a marriage. In fact, the main reason for the persistence of this cruel practice is the fact that parents can sell their mutilated daughters off for marriage. It is common to take daughters out of school, mutilate them and exchange them for cows with the future husband, the spokesperson said.
