Uganda – Uganda’s president Yoweri Museveni want to ban FGM in Uganda, a spokesperson of the President announces earlier this week. Under the envisioned law, performing FGM would be considered a crimial act and even constitute murder, and thus the death penalty for the practitioner, should the victim die as a result of the procedure. Amnesty International have reacted to the announcement by stating that while they support the plans to make FGM illegal, they oppose plans to execute practitioners, should a victim of FGM die. The organisation also voiced concerns about the likelihood of Uganda enacting the law, arguing that the country’s record of implementing women’s rights is “mixed”.
Museveni regards the abolishment of FGM as “step towards modernity” of his country. As poverty plays an important part in the persistence of the practice, the president has suggested financial compensations for former FGM practitioners to help their transition to legal employment.

Has Yoweri Museveni been successful in implementing this law and thereby saving millions of Ugandan girls the pain of this barbaric practice? I can only hope that there are other enlightened African men out there who support him.

Very great post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have truly loved surfing around your blog posts. In any case I’ll be subscribing in your rss feed and I hope you write once more soon!
My heart bled after seeing Desert Flower,
The tears swelled and rolled down my cheeks as evidence of the pain I felt because I could not believe that this type of unholy act could happen in the place so many African American former slaves long to visit. Africa, the Garden of Eden, where God produced this beautiful flower surrounded by thorns of the evil that men and women do to each for thousands of years. Women have suffered all over the world. This is the most hideous crime ever imagined. We must help stop treacherous crimes against women and their children? There is only one God and he will continue to bring forth the truth, change, and liberate all women. God will wash away our pain one day and evil will be destroyed and sent to the bottomless pit forever. Amen. I will light a candle in the darkness for those that have and will go through the fire for his sake. I know that this is true because I have seen his beautiful light and lived to tell it. “God bless you” Waris Dairie and your family.
