Waris Dirie is looking forward to her desert flowers

Desert Flower Foundation helps 1000 Children and Families in Sierra Leone

The next few weeks Waris Dirie will spend in Sierra Leone to get an accurate picture of progress in the tireless fight against female genital mutilation. "I can’t wait to meet my 1000 little godchildren in Sierra Leone," says Waris.

The Desert Flower Foundation financially supports 1000 godchildren and their families in six communities in the West African state. For example, the entire school fee is paid. In return, the families are contracted to refrain from cruel FGM of the girls and not to force them to marry.

The families and children are regularly visited by our staff in Sierra Leone and they are there to help with conflict and problem solving. Thanks to education and schooling, our little desert flowers are supposed to grow into self-confident and proud women. The aim of the Desert Flower Foundation is to encourage girls and young women to speak out against the brutal FGM ritual in their communities.

Targeted education is the only way to successfully stop FGM. Also in Sierra Leone!
