The Samia sports programme

Sport strengthens the self-confidence of girls and women
The Samia sports programme
The movie Samia tells the story of Somali track and field athlete Samia Yusuf Omar.
With the Samia sports project, the Desert Flower Foundation supports sports programmes for girls in Africa.
"I am a passionate sportswoman myself and work out every day. In Paris, I even opened my own fitness centre just for women with Heimat by Waris Dirie," says Waris Dirie.

The Samia sports programme is named after the young Somali athlete Samia Yusuf Omar, who paid with her life for her dream of taking part in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Our founder Waris Dirie plays a supporting role in the movie by director Yasemin Samdereli ("Almanya - Welcome to Germany").
What does all this have to do with our fight against female genital mutilation?
We raise funds at Desert Flower Foundation charity sporting events, such as women's runs, tennis events, golf proAms and charity football matches.
