First FGM prosecution in Somalia hampered by parents of deceased Deeqa

Following the death of 10-year-old Deeqa Nuur as a result of genital mutilation, the first prosecution for FGM in Somalia's history began.

During the investigation, it turned out that the parents cruelly mutilated their daughter for only US $ 5.

But now the investigation  is hampered by the parents of the deceased girl.
They refuse to help investigators to locate the cuttter as they fear the revenge of the villagers, who still believe that FGM is an important ritual and oppose authorities.
The investigation must be conducted under massive police protection.

The Desert Flower Foundation will continue reporting on this particularly cruel case.
