Horrible! Genital mutilation on the rise again

4.2 million girls are at risk of FGM in 2023

A Desert Flower sponsorship protects girls from FGM.

UN SECRETARY-GENERAL SOUNDS ALARM !

After female genital mutilation (FGM) had been on the decline throughout Africa in recent years, this horrific and inhumane practice is on the rise again.

4.2 million girls are at risk of FGM in 2023 - more than ever before!

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recently made it clear: "FGM is one of the worst manifestations of patriarchy and harms society as a whole. It is an abhorrent violation of basic human rights." Click here to read the report.

Months of school closures due to the Corona pandemic and prolonged droughts are cited as reasons for the renewed rise in FGM numbers. The school closures deprived girls of an important shelter. Famines lead to more forced marriages - the only source of income for many families in Africa - and therefore to more genital mutilations again.

The Desert Flower Foundation will therefore once again intensify its activities in Africa! All our sponsored girls are protected from genital mutilation and forced marriage. They can also attend school and receive medical care.

You can help too! Because your donation makes the difference between suffering or a self-determined life.
